Mr. B The Gentleman Rhymer’s Probably Accurate Hip-Hop History
Mr.B tells the story of Hip-Hop from its beginnings with Dame Edith Sitwell to its current malaise. With songs from 50 years of the Rap Songbook and almost 20 of Chap-Hop tunes on the subject, from ‘Straight Out Of Surrey’ and ‘Chap-Hop History’ to ‘Hip-Hop Was To Blame After All’ and ‘The Crack Song’, Mr.B will weave the story, as he, from his Surrey mansion understands it. From Kool Herc coming from Kingston (upon Thames) to invent a new genre of music, through the golden ages of the 80s, the gangs of Compton (near Godalming), the crack tea epidemic into the corporate seizure of a culture and its attempts to break free and through to the 21st century where old blokes don’t really know what’s going on anymore.
It’s an hour of songs, beatmaking, beatboxing, looping, storytelling and probably too much banjolele.
Mr.B invented chap-Hop in the summer of 2007, having drunk too much sherry and inadvertently created a new culture.
His first ditty- ‘A Piece Of My Mind’ was released that summer on Second Royal Records in Japan and his first album ‘Flattery Not Included’ followed in the UK in 2008, featuring his million+ viewed YouTube hit ‘Chap-Hop History’.
Since then he has travelled the world, from Surrey to Osaka, Banstead to Berlin, Middlesborough to Minneapolis, Norway to New York and the Edinburgh Fringe to Glastonbury bringing his beats, rhymes and manners. As well as songs about cricket, pipe smoking, high society and interfering with livestock.
Mr.B has recorded 14 albums, including his latest ‘B-Curious’, his videos have garnered millions of view on YouTube, and his media appearances have included rapping for Jeremy Paxman on Newsnight, playing live on BBC Radio One for Rob Da Bank, Nick Grimshaw and Scott Mills, on Radio Two for Claudia Winkleman and Steve Lamacq, 6Music for Tom Robinson and Shaun Keanveny and for Zoe Ball on Sky Arts. He was also once the front page of the Wall Street Journal and was described by the Daily Mail as ‘Controversial’.
In 2023 he was asked by the legendary art-rock band Sparks to be their special guest touring the UK and Europe (including two nights at the Royal Albert Hall) He was the cover star of the winter ’23 edition of The Chap magazine.
