Fold are a Leeds-based music collective with four core members and a cast of collaborators that drift in & out. Since 2012 they’ve been devoted to amplifying humanitarian perspectives and critical reflections on today’s world. By incorporating a wide range of voices including MCs, poets, historical speakers and singers into their music, they occupy musical spaces with affirming messages, lateral thinking and emotional journeys that help connect listeners with the humanity of others.
Having cultivated both an underground following and a few rebellious friends in high places, Fold’s music is played on BBC 6 Music, BBC Radio One, Amazing Radio and many other independent stations across the world. They’ve been featured in The Times, The Guardian, The NME and more.
Fold are always keen to lend direct support to urgent causes wherever possible. They’ve participated in benefit gigs for refugees, migrants and asylum seekers, supplied an acclaimed remix of hip-hop duo Ceiling Demons for the UK CALM charity, released an emergency track to raise money for wounded civilians in Gaza during Israeli bombing raids in 2014 and most recently donated several tracks to compilations raising money for Gazans amidst the ongoing devastation.
On a local level, Fold were awarded funding last year from the West Yorkshire Mayor’s Safer Communities Fund to run a music production workshop for young people facing barriers in Leeds. During severe floods a few years back that wrecked several rehearsal spaces and recording studios that were hugely important to the Leeds music community, Fold took part in a benefit gig at The Brudenell Social Club as one of the headliners, managing to help raise enough funds to save all of those businesses effected.
