Cold Bath Street Sessions

Sunday 11th August 2024

The Cold Bath Street project began in Preston in 2013. It grew out of a group of musicians who were interested in improvising, exploring and finding out what they could do with sound, but also who simply wanted to get together to make great music.
As the project has evolved it has encompassed different forms: As well as running workshops and appearing at festivals, it’s made three studio albums and done many concerts, particularly around the northwest, including Northern Green, Trades Club, Jimmys Manchester, Noise Upstairs, Ribble Valley Jazz, supporting Acid Mothers Temple, Damo Suzuki and Chris Corsano, even playing with Carl Palmer of ELP in Preston.
CBS’s musical remit is unusually wide: Alongside the squeaks and bleeps of free improvisation the project embraces the traditions of pop music – grooves, chords, melodies etc. It welcomes any instruments – from voice to violin, madal to electronics. CBS has collaborated regularly with artists from other disciplines including dancers, poets, live soundtrack, circus performers and visual artists including film-maker Anne Fox. The nature of the project is that it has a fairly consistent core membership but an ever-changing list of guests. Ex-members have gone on to successful outfits including Mobius Loop and Working Men’s Club.
Within sessions, CBS look to create an inclusive environment of sharing and co-creation. Listening, empathy and responding are emphasised rather than theory or virtuosity. Recently the band have delivered monthly workshops at the Ferret in Preston using their GRID system – this telling people when to play but not what to play, this giving freedom but also an element of structure. Though guidance will sometimes be briefly offered, talking is kept to a minimum and playing to a maximum. CBS also continue to work regularly with young people in sessions in schools, colleges and universities, offering advice, encouragement and opportunity to a new generation of players.
